March Madness ATS Records: Each Seed’s Betting History Against the Spread

BETMGM

There wasn’t an 11-seed in the Final Four of the 2022 NCAA Tournament – after two 11-seeds had reached the national semifinals in the last three tournaments – but 11-seeds went 6-3 against the spread to continue recent dominance in March Madness betting.

Despite a sub-.500 ATS record from 2005-10 (17-19-1), 11-seeds have the best NCAA Tournament ATS record among all seeds since 2005. At 74-52-2, they’ve covered nearly 60 percent of spreads over the last 17 tournaments.

Here’s the ATS record for each seed since the 2005 NCAA Tournament (not including First Four games):

Not sure St Peter's 2022 squad should be listed twice

After the first one it's obvious they were pretty good

So how can the 2nd 'upset' also rank as one of the biggest all time :+clueless

I have wondered about this myself, specifically 11 seeds that have played a play-in game. Usually the difference in talent between a 6 and an 11 isn't that great, and the 11 seed might be a bit more mentally sharp and the 6 seed a bit more flat because of the difference in layoffs.

I have no idea if data back my theory up, but I remember thinking this was the case in 2011 when VCU beat up on a flat Georgetown team.
